This little chair is a charmer with wonderful ‘bones’. It inspired me to paint the cohesive wide soft stripes behind the flowers and butterflies. All the butterflies are real species and most are native to the Northeastern US which is where the little girl who now owns this chair lives. Of course I would never ignore the back!! Don’t you just love Lunar moths? I chose to paint wild flowers like Chicory and wild Asters which are so much less formal and more likely to be part of a child’s real world.

Abstract Child’s Rocker
Not everything I paint has to be realism. Once in a while I do something like this chair with just designs. This child’s rocking chair was inspired by an abstract wrought iron lamp from the room into which it was intended to go. It was designed to be neither very masculine nor very feminine. As in anything I do the underlying theme is balance. When the artistic tensions within a piece are in balance there is a sense of pleasure and comfort. Of course I still had to paint sort of signature critter on it. Can you find it? Hint, it is not an insect this time!!!
Fairy Flower Rocker
A new Grandma commissioned the painting of this rocker for ‘Gianna’ and when she came to pick it up, the first thing she said was, “This was worth the wait!!” The rocking chair was factory painted white. It is wide and solid and needed delicate decoration to feminize it.
Each whimsically painted side is unique. On one there is a little flower fairy floating away on bubbles. On the other, another little flower fairy tightrope walks on a spider web using a toadstool parasol for balance. Chicory is such a pretty wild flower; It’s delicate and yet sturdy enough to support one end of the spider silk tightrope while wild grasses support the other end! It is so easy to add too much profusion of growth when painting wild grasses and flowers and I resisted that temptation because this piece called for a delicate hand. Subtly was my aim for the butterfly clinging to a blade of grass. I chose mostly wild flowers which a child would encounter in her own world, such as Purple Vetch and Violets. However, I couldn’t resist painting these delicate pink Poppies which were inspired by some I had seen waving gracefully by a pond when I was in Japan visiting my son. Did you notice the ladybug?
Child’s Rocker with Trompe L’oeil Marbles
What a joy to paint this child’s rocking chair! I painted an old fashioned freight train across the back rest and kept the color scheme low key. Of course I couldn’t resist adding detail to the cars. But the best part of this piece is the Tompe L’oeil on the seat where I painted a few leaves and two marbles. The light glinting through the glass is what makes it all work! My grandson was eighteen months old when he was shown this chair and his little hand scrabbled at a leaf trying to pick it up. Is that affirmation or what? The rear side of my painted chairs is never ignored. In this case I thought a little red caboose would be very appropriate, do you agree?
